drivers seat back repair

hi all

the outer edge of my drivers seat back has lost its support, the foam inner has lost its shape over the years,

so i want to fix it, ive seen YT clips on seat removal and separating the back rest from the base but none on removing the leather seat back to gain access to the foam padding,

i have had the plastic back cover off but not been able to see how to continue

anyone able to share there experience??

thanks

Just to keep this thread active...I am similarly interested in any comments re. repairing the seat back. Mine is starting to come apart at the seam in the part of the bolster that one rubs against constantly while getting into the car. I'm interested in hearing from folks who've attempted a repair vs. simply replacing the seat.

I'm guessing that the OP here is dealing with the right side seat whereas I (in the US) am dealing with the left side seat. If we have the same color upholstery and seat style, perhaps we should just swap. :-) (joke)

If you’re thinking about removing the leather covering, it’s more work than you’d think.

You have to cut a ton of hog clips that hold the seat cover to the foam. And at that point all you’ve done is gain access to the foam. I’m not 100% sure how you would fix it. Getting to that point isn’t terrible, but reinstalling the hog clips is the hard part.

Replacing the seat backrest upholstery (both foam and cover) is the better option. It avoids the worst aspects of removing the cover only, and solves both the foam and leather/vinyl wear issues as long as you get one in good condition.

If you just have some leather wear but the foam is okay, then getting it fixed by an automotive upholstery repair place is probably the best play. They can do some pretty impressive work.

How about finding an auto upholstery shop?

Also look what one member did:

thanks for the link, very helpful.

let me say regards a motor trimmer, i live in regional Australia, here its pretty hard to find anyone to do anything.

plus a 19 year old car is for me an on going project, half the fun comes from fixing it myself

thanks none the less

You need to get a passenger seat back cushion in the same colour leather from a foreign country that drives on the opposite side of the road.
Contact people on Facebook who are breaking/dismantling vehicles. Or a BMW specialist in the country of choice

Yeah, thanks! I think that this is my situation...it's just an issue of finding a good upholstery repair place in my area. I went to one some years ago to replace the passenger side seat bottom (failed airbag sensor, which when it failed again, I just coded it out). But they're gone now.

I'm tempted to go at it myself with the proper thread and an upholstery needle.

Oh dang that’s pretty rough. Wasn’t expecting the seat to be coming apart.

If you don’t care too much about how it looks when it’s finished, the DIY method on this is prob okay. To truly repair the stitching and make it look original is a fair bit of work.

Best option here IMO is good condition used rear cushion w/cover off eBay or from a yard. I think it would probably be cheaper too (but just a guess).
