UPDATE (6/5/25): First of all, thank you for all of the replies, this community never ceases to amaze me! Secondly, I was fortunate enough to go visit my mom near San Jose and got referred to a guy with a shop and showroom, who had the AutoLogic tablet - he cleared the codes and then reset them and voila! Even better, he didn't want to charge me anything - so I bought lunch for him & his team of 10 today Still cheaper than $240, but good deeds should never go unrewarded!

Long time listener, first time caller...2006 330xi, volume knob & display wore out on the OEM radio, so picked up a replacement on eBay, installed it, no sound - display lights up, accepts CDs, but no sound - checked the infrared into the amp (good), into the TCU (good), under the steering wheel (no light), so I looped the TCU with a bypass loop adapter, still nothing.

1) does no light from the fiber optic cable under the steering wheel mean the TCU is not outputting? If so, that (& b/c I have the SOS) is why I bypassed.

2) The only thing I noticed in the replacement radio is that the Model #'s (CD-73) are the same, but the Part #s are different, but the replacement radio is from a 2007 vs. the original 2006, so I figured it would be forward compatible.

Any thoughts? Is this a coding issue? If so, any way to do it on the cheap - asked a shop and they said $240 to recode it...and no guarantee it works.

Is there another radio I can just swap in that would be plug & play?

You generally have to code the Radio to your car when you replace it
unless you where real lucky and the new one came from a car with your exact options.

There are three different common configuration for the output signal from the
Radio depending on which of the three sound systems you have.

You can try to find BMW Standard Tools which was a free download.
Then you need a PC laptop and a K/D can cable to set it up.
Then you do default coding with NCSExpert for the Radio .
This programs your factory setting which are stored in car to the Radio .
Also you need to have bought a Radio that has a Most Bus connector on the back
in Europe there are some that don't.

there should be a light on the back of the radio where the most bus originates I believe.
If the most bus is turned on .

Also there are many ytubes on how to code with NCSexpert.

Bimmergeeks app may work for this I am not sure you would have check with them .
Says it does everything for coding but I would ask just to be sure.

It's likely the car came out of a car that doesn't have the Logic7 system, therefore its not sending those signals out. You will need to code it before the radio knows that its hooked up to a Logic7 system and needs to send out the proper digital signals to the Logic7 amp.

I used INPA to code my radio when I replaced it with a new unit since the screen had completely failed on my Alpine built CD73 model.

What all do you need to do this? And does it provide Bluetooth connection capability or anything like that?

2006 radios are a different manufacturere IIRC, so changing to a newer one is likely to have some extra steps.

Can you swap the face of the radio? I know you can do that on the CCC and CICs. As others have said, it came from a car without L7. Coding is not just for L7. It is also for the bluetooth and or USB options. The radio needs to know what options your car has.

I would not waste any coding money on another pre LCI radio. Get a 2009+ which has the screen that does not fail and HD radio.
