I suspect the diff on my 07 e92 335i auto is failing. Found several used ones on line like one from a 2012 e92 335xi. Are diffs from an e90 and e92 interchangeable or are they year specific, awd or rear wheel drive specific? Will I also have to swap out my rear cv axles as well?

They are awd or rwd specific, and engine / trans specific. I can't recall if the IS had an LSD. This might be a great opportunity to upgrade to an LSD.

Steady on there; so long as the diff ratio is the same, AWD and RWD diffs are the same. Only M3 got an LSD. Agreed that it's the prime opportunity to upgrade.

All e9x of the same spec will have the same diff, except M3; 90/91/92/93 doesn't matter, so long as the drivetrains match. You can find the diff ratio by looking up the spec of car on realoem. You can find the diff size (215L, etc) by looking at the diff gasket set on realoem.

I'd guess that the ratio would be different, but you can look it up if you want to be sure.

e90 and e92 diffs are interchangeable for cars with 6speed ZF.

2012 e92 is DCT trans, the diff is not direct fit for you without mod, the driveshaft lengths are different. it physically can bolt to your subframe, but thats about as far as you can go.

The 2007 will be a 215L and the 2012 will be a 188L. And the ratios will be different. Both diffs will mount in the subframe, but nothing else will fit; neither prop shaft nor output shafts. All from realoem.

Thanks all. I realize the ratio us not a big deal for me as I do mostly highway driving so going from a 3.46 to a 3.08 using a manual sorced diff may be the quickest repair for me. Those images really helped for me to identify the differences of the larger pumpkin and the small cv axle points. From whatbI gather most manuals have the larger pumpkin with the 3.08. I will lose some grunt on the local roads but the highway might be more enjoyable. Thanks all.
