Lifted E70 X5 with Oversized Tires
Gents,
I finally got my oversized tires installed on the wife's 2008 BMW X5 3.0si. I installed a set of Custom Ceika Performance Coilovers that gave me a .75" lift on all four corners. I then installed some Falken Wildpeak AT3W tires in 265/60R18 on the stock 18x8.5" rims. These are 30.5" diameter tires compared to the 29.3" diameter stock 255/55R18. I was worried the tires were going to be super noisy, but they are just barely louder. I can't imagine they are louder than stock run flats, but have a nice soft ride. Overall I'm happy with the tires. I thought they would look a little more dramatic, but they pretty much look stock. Clearing the Upper Control Arm Knuckle with 20mm Spacers:

I considered this question after the lift, but haven't been paying attention...and the tires were just put on Thursday so not enough time to tell. I'll reset the MPG gauge and check in a few days.
I've put on a few thing that already affect the MPG. The roof racks dropped my MPG significantly, and the BMS PowerBox tune dropped it a little more. I was sitting at 21MPG average after those mods but before the tires/lift. I didn't want to abandon Xoutpost since that is where I got the idea for all of this, but I'll answer your question here: The tires have an awesome ride. They add a positive element to the whole setup because for the damping I need with the additional height the ride gets a bit rough, but the tires soften it up. You don't need the lift to put the tires on though. The front suspension piece you have to clear doesn't move when you lift it so that doesn't help at all. You need either the lower offset rims like Lambeau's Touren TR60 18X8 ET20 or you need spacers.

Here are a few new pics. I measured the height change including the tires and suspension and it's 1.25" overall. Not huge.

That's a good question. I have to imagine the answer is yes, it will cause more wear on those parts but not necessarily "damage." The main wear from the suspension lift should be the axle CV joints. The tires should put more wear on the rest of the driveline. The lift is super small and tire size change is minimal also, so probably not a big deal. Maybe someone else on here has better subject matter knowledge?

that small of a change, the long form answer is no. I mean that's tiny. I had a grand Cherokee, and went from a 27" tall tire, to 32"s with the only change being suspension. The X5's have weak'ish TC's, but I would bet the half shafts will be fine. It does make a difference looks wise for sure, so probably worth it. Your mileage would be hard to track being as your speed is no longer 'accurate' with the new tire size change.

The actual speed difference always changes with speed though so you can't say its' accurate all the time anyway. I took my E46 M3 up to 175mph on the dash but gps was reading 162mph

This is fantastic! I love it, especially for the red dirt Hawaii terrain! Which island is it on?

Thanks! I'm on Oahu so not too much "terrain" around unless you go up in the mountains and then you need legit 4x4...I did put in for my Ka'ena Point permit though, which has a very rough unimproved road network parallel to the beach...hopefully I get some good pics out there that make it look like the X5 is good off road

That looks really cool.
Im gonna guess maybe it hurt the mps's in the city but you gained some mpg's on high way due to the bigger circumference. i doubt you added more weight with extra tire than if you had just gone with bigger rims. who thinks it's possible to do 260/55R18 without changing the suspension? or even 265/55R18 ?

This low offset and wide tire also means you need to get fender flares if your vehicle doesn't already have them. I have the fender flares and running stock rims with 20mm spacer front and 30mm spacer rear. If you want bigger tires than 265/60R18 then you will need to wait for a company to design a legit suspension lift complete with redesigned control arms, longer axle shafts, brake lines, wider fender flares, and rims with super low offset to completely clear the hub carrier. You would need several inches of lift to clear the wheel well and prevent the tires from rubbing on the front and rear of the wheel well. I doubt anyone will make a legit lift for this truck since it would be a lot of R&D for an almost non-exsistent market. I'm not sure it can even be done because of the front differential design. |

The jeep guys run strut spacers you can buy made for the Grand Cherokee's, if someone made one for the X's in theory you could lift them. I would bet there is a small market for folks looking for that, so maybe some funky home brew stuff may happen by someone slick enough

Just wanted to hop in this thread to say thank you! I recently destroyed the OE wheel on a pot hole, which gave me a great excuse to change wheel/tire setup.
In the midst of searching for the right tire size, I came across your thread and was able to pick the right size! I went with Hankook RF10 265/60/18. I had a set of 18" Hamann HM2 that I had on my e34 previously so I threw those on. Hub bore is 74.1mm and offset is et13 (compared to stock et46) so I had enough clearance from the offset difference itself. All worked out and now the car sits pretty and rides amazing! Definitely glad to get away from those terrible runflats. Anywho, this is how she sits now. Thanks again for this write up!

Until I see a 4-6 inch lift option I would not consider to do a loft. Those tires looks great thou.. imaging with fuel rims it will looks way better

I agree, the larger tires ride so much better. Not to mention, perform much better overall.

What’s the specifics on the E34?? I have owned 8-10 of them over the years, and I have a huge sweet spot for the E34. Would love to see some more pictures of it.
