BMW 228i ticking noise
Hi guys, recently purchased a 2014 228i with 108k kms a couple weeks ago, I’ve noticed on cold starts it has a pretty loud ticking noise for 1 to 1.5 mins then subsides and car drives and sounds normal I was wondering if this is normal or if it’s possibly a timing chain or lifter issues or if anyone has any advice. I’ve just had a general service oil and filter and hasn’t seemed to make any difference thus far.
See attached Video link note toward end of video how noise quiets down im guessing that’s because the revs drop but it just seems very loud https://youtube.com/shorts/jFIEoJS0u...EyAWBvPQglek-Z |

Google is your friend.
Just did a simple google search "2014 bmw 228i engine" and found your engine is a N20B20 inline 4 cylinder. Did another simple google search "2014 bmw 228i N20B20 engine noise" and got, The 2014 BMW 228i (N20B20 engine) is known for being relatively noisy, often producing a "diesel-like" ticking or rattling sound at idle. While many of these sounds are normal due to the high-pressure fuel injectors, the N20 engine also has known issues with timing chain failures that can present as a whining or rattling noise. Here is a breakdown of common noises for this vehicle and their causes: 1. Normal N20 Engine Sounds

Also, you're posting this question in the BMW E90/E91/E92/E93 (2005–2011) 3 Series Forum, we don't have the same car or engine as you, so it is unlikely you will get any decent responses here.
You are much better off asking your questions in the 2 Series Forum for your car, https://www.2addicts.com/forums/ , you will get much better responses there. Last edited by shannon1; 04-16-2026 at 03:13 PM.. |
