RB spun @ 49k

I have a 16 e89 Z4 35i that has rod knock and an oil filter that looks like glitter overdose. That said I have sourced a used 6 bolt and will swap it myself. I would however like to have the original engine rebuilt and am trying to see who to use and if anyone is close. I am in western PA. The replacement engine I sourced is higher mileage than the one I am removing and I hope to only need run it till I can have my original rebuilt. Sorry if this is the wrong area for this post but it feels like it might be the best place to find those who have dealt with this before. Thanks in advance for any help

Damn, that sucks.

IMO a rebuilt engine after a failure is 9 times out of 10 not quite as good as the original. It can be done, but the vast majority end up having some kind of related issue down the road so with an engine as mass produced as the N54, a lower than original mile replacement is more often the safest route.

That being said if you're committed to keeping the original engine with the chassis, there are certainly a few rebuilders that are capable of doing this. The only one I know of honestly is ABR Houston which is not close to you but does quality rebuilds.

Avoid Ghassan like the plague.

I had a hard time finding a 6 bolt with less than 100k on it and I'm guessing under 50k will be next to impossible. My motor isn't seized so I feel like if they put a new crank and rods / bearings I should be good but I don't know what to think. I still can't believe it spun this car wasn't beat, stored winters, always fresh oil, I guess I dodged it on all the M3's so it had to happen to my Z. The only place I found so far was Miami engines so no closer than Houston which isn't a huge deterrent if I can make a vaca out of it. And yes I saw to avoid that fellow but I'm old so I know if it sounds to good to be true it usually is.

VAC since you're in PA.
Or look up Scott Martin, he builds engines extremely well.

2nd VAC for proximity to you. Obviously, the more you can do the better for cost. If it's just a lower end rebuild with any necessary machining and you can handle the majority of reassembly, that would help. Probably going to have to check a lot thoroughly for wear though - oil pump, cam journals, anything that might have seen metal.
