Crank No Start (EWS/EKPM/DME/CAN bus?) (episode 400)
Lot’s of Crank No Start Variants but I am not seeing what I am looking for. Thanks in advance.
2011 328i that had a bad CAS. No signs of life except for Angel Eyes with key in ignition. That’s it. No door locks, no comfort access, no seat motor or window movement or interior lighting. I have swapped the DME/CAS/Key with a used pair set, and hope to have the original back soon to clear the faulty mileage and make all the numbers happy. With the used set in, I do have lights and power like normal. Crank no start. This has been driving me nuts. I originally was on the pathway of diagnosing modules and potentially doing some programing. Diag setup has been pretty wishywashy, and a lot of things with ISTA/INPA are not working or working intermittently. This is likely an issue with the setup but potentially could be a issue with the car itself. When things are working, I can pull codes and perform some service functions. I cannot do anything on standard tools for some reason, and at this point I do not see it being necessary. I am directing focus now to the vehicle itself, for the following reasons. - The main issue with having no power is resolved - I do not appear to have any codes suggesting issues with the DME-CAS sync - No EWS codes at this time - DME/CAS should be getting serviced soon, so hopefully if it boils down to that, there’s no sense and losing hair over it now. - Based on my research, I am slightly confident that all handshakes are good, and the vehicle SHOULD be starting. - I just discovered the coils do have spark, which has slightly reassured me that the modules are at least somewhat satisfied. Now, I am looking into a possible EKPM issue or maybe the fuel pump itself. This is a bit of a foggy area, as from what I understand, there were no fueling issues prior to the CAS going out. As much as I was expecting this to be a simple module issue, I am now beginning to think there were some issues before the module situation. There is spark at the plugs. There is absolutely no fuel pressure. F70 is good. I do have power going into my EKPM3. When I put key into ignition, it seems I am getting “some” voltage out of the EKPM, right about the 3 seconds I was informed to expect. I did have quite a few codes, I am not sure which all are relevant as it sounds like this all started from low voltage issues and may have been accumulated. I have a few codes that may or may not still be present, and I will verify them the next time the connection holds. 2ACC DME Switch Delay code. CAS: Supply, terminal 30E/30L I will work on gathering more data as far as voltages or to any suggestions, as this is an abrupt change in course. If anyone has had a similar issue; - is there any relevance behind EWS potentially turning off my EPKM? - If there was an EWS issue, I am suggesting that I would not have spark? - I am navigating the BUS and I do see 15_WUP going to EKPM, and I am wondering if this is potentially related to EWS. 2011 328i. It is not a SULEV and I hope I don’t have to confirm that. I have INPA/ISTA (on a good day which today was not) DVOM available. Thanks!! |

Update,
I found out I do have a SULEV car. Pulled the caps and looks like everything is intact. I can trigger the pump on ISTA without issue. Pump will not prime with key in ignition. Car still will not start. Pulled the codes and got the following, EGS: Communication fault: PT-CAN Sending original computers out soon. Looking like this might be an EWS4 issue, as the EWS4 requires ISN’s from DME, CAS, and EGS module from transmission. Definitely was throw off with the spark being there but running out of other logical options. I’ve seen some of the rabbit holes with PT-CAN and not looking forward to if it turns into one of those. |
