Looking to change 'Coolant Feed Pipe Hose' aka 'engine supply-coolant pump'.

Hello,

I am planning a game plan for changing the coolant pipe hose (Red) which is attached to the coolant feed pipe (Blue).

My plan was to remove the following:

1. Remove the U-sign coolant hose (Green) in order to reach the coolant feed pipe.
2. Take out the coolant hose (Red) attached to the 'coolant feed pipe' without taking out the pipe itself.
3. Replace the coolant hose (Red) then put back the U-sign coolant hose (Green)

For someone who's changed this, is this a good idea or even possible? If not, what i plan to do instead is taking out the water pump, U-turn hose, then finally the coolant pipe hose or the pipe itself

Cant help you on install procedure, as my water-oil heat exchanger retrofit is ready but not installed yet. Will detail it when it's done before the new year.

...But you can certainly order just that hose (red) [CHE0496] . Big PITA to remove the clip that holds it on though (replaced that exact rubber hose on the ebay 528i feed pipe I had shipped). I could not have done so from under the car because in the infinite wisdom of the folks in Bavaria, they don't have 90° tangs on the clip to assist with install/removal. I put some change in the swear jar for sure.

I'd budget for the crush plate thing [11537534880] & a new gasket [11517514942] for (Blue) that are on the opposite end, as not removing (blue) before (red) may be effort-prohibitive. They are forgettably cheap. "while you're in there...".

In theory there's plenty of flex for you to remove (green) & (Blue) no sweat. No need to pull off the pump.

I really appreicate the input and will replace the two you mentioned. With that being said, i will look to take out the pipe (blue) so I can also replace the coolant hose (Red) more easily.

I saw a very helpful video on Youtube ShopLifeTV and noticed how difficult it really is to remove that clip you're talking about. I will try to either saw it off or use a knife to break it.

You don't need to pull off the green u pipe.
The two bolts holding the blue onto the block are miserable to get re-started when you're putting the pipe back on.

Not a problem, boss. I used hardened pliers and shimmy'd it backwards (not forwards) until a sliver of the clip's edge was off the rubber. Then just pried at the rubber until it came off.

Best of luck on the removal & installation. I'll be doing the install soon here after you...

Were you all able to replace the rubber section of the hose without removing the metal feed pipe?

I nicked the rubber a tiny bit when I was replacing my water pump last year. It's been fine since then, but I've wanted to replace it. I have a couple other coolant hoses to replace now so I'm planning to do it at the same time, but if it's going to be too difficult then I might just leave it.

I'm planning to replace the U hose anyway, so that will be off, but I don't know if it's possible to replace the rubber section without removing either the metal pipe or the water pump. I plan to leave the water pump bolted to the car...does anyone remember if it would be possible to replace the rubber section with everything bolted in place?

I'm replacing the U hose and the thermostat to cylinder head hose (the one with the mickey mouse flange). If it's not too hard then I'll just do the rubber section too, but if the removal is questionable then I'll leave it alone.

Is it possible to remove the original clamp without cutting it?

Thanks for your advice!

For taking out the coolant feed pipe, I didn't remove the water pump nor thermostat. Annoying part of this job is 2 bolts that goes onto the engine side so make sure you jack up the car enough so you can navigate aruond easily.

About removing the original clamp, i am guessing you saw this video. The answer is yes - I had to use a special plier to press and lock in the metal hook clamp very strongly (to open the gap) then pull out the hose. For installing a new hose, it's pretty much the same concept and you can watch that same linked video.

If not sure, you can just pick up a whole new coolant feed pipe for $160 (https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ve-11537535829)

Thank you! I'm hoping to replace the rubber section without removing the metal pipe. After watching a few videos it looks like there might be just enough space to do it, but I'm probably going to leave it alone unless the hose looks bad when I get down there.

When I replaced my water pump I wasn't paying attention and tried to loosen this hose from the water pump with a pick, but I put the pick underneath the clamp instead of between the water pump and the hose. I don't think I caused any damage to it, but it's been on my mind since then. That was a year and a half ago and it's been fine, so I'll take a look when I get down there and make sure.
